Born and raised in Portland Oregon, my friends and I have always loved going to wander the creaky wood floors of Music Millennium. The one on the corner of 32nd and E. Burnside Street especially. It opened in 1969, is owned and operated by Terry Currier and presently the oldest record store in the Pacific Northwest. A national leader in the music-selling industry, it is Portland's absolute go-to place for music and expertise..
The location in this painting, on the corner of NW 23rd and Johnson opened in 1995 and closed in 2007 due to a high dollar rent district combined with a downturn of recorded music. The marquee appropriately read "Portland U Rule" after its closing until Fireside, a cozy new restaurant, dressed it with their own signage.
Walking there one sunny morning I came across a parade of Westie dogs and snapped a few photos, thinking it would be a fun painting. I altered it to a drizzly, dusk evening setting. The wet, fall season so that I could add umbrellas. I painted an all-over amber warmth, with glowing headlights and shop windows. It feels like a romantic movie set. On the somber day that Prince died, I was working on this, so I placed an honorary raspberry beret on a girl. I gave my son Alex a front row seat in front of the store. He's one of those lucky people who are musically gifted. I also added the Bridgeport Brewing Company truck. Bridgeport is one of the first microbreweries that opened in 1984 in Portland. Another local success story.
