Inspiration for this painting came in two forms. A photograph I had seen once of a wrangler on his horse in the midst of a big cloud of dust and my own imagination. I wanted the challenge of setting him in the dark and opening out to a colorful landscape and sea. Is he waiting for someone or something to arrive? Or watching them leave? Has he just inherited this land or has he lost it? It changed for me many times over the months of working on this painting, In the end, what I do know is that whether the day is challenging or grand...if we tilt our hat up and look ahead we are sure to see the sun.
